App Store Wars
Of course with the popularity of Apps it only make sense that companies would begin to battle over who can distribute them. After Apple’s huge success in the App world it looks like now Google and Mozilla (Firefox) are entering the ring. Really though, that battle won’t take place on your mobile device like you would expect, but your computer.
At Apples “Back To The Mac” event they announced their plans to release the Mac App Store for Mac computers. This would allow you to have the ability to quickly and easily download new software to your Mac. It will have the little apps that you have come to love and even software like iLife.
This idea is actually nothing new, Google had announced their plans for a Web App store back in June and if you’re a gamer, platforms such as Steam and GOG.com have allowed digital distribution of software for years now.
What really makes this interesting is the approach that Google and Mozilla are taking. They are going to be Web App Store as opposed to just an App Store. A Web App is very similar to a normal appilcation but it is ran off the web. This allows you to access it from anywhere and possibly any platform. This could allow developers to create an app once that works on the Mobile, PC and Mac platforms.
The other huge benefit is that Google is only charging a 5% processing fee versus Apple’s 30%. You also can put anything up in the store without having to worry about Apple’s guidelines. Lastly it means if there is a bug in your program you can update it immediately and not have to wait on Apple to approve it.
Ultimately I think it will be more of a battle between Mozilla and Google. I think Apple’s store will be successful but used for different types of apps then the Firefox and Google stores. All this just means better products for the end user which I couldn’t be happier for.
